Rich, smooth, nutty, and irresistible, homemade almond butter is easy to make at home! Learn how to make almond butter yourself. You’ll save money and have total control over the final product.

Easy Homemade Almond Butter Recipe - Little Sunny Kitchen (1)

I LOVE almond butter. I also love peanut butter, cashew butter, it doesn’t matter. Nut butter is my thing. Whether it’s on toast, in a sandwich, in a smoothie, I love how Almond butter is creamy, nutty, and packed with protein and healthy fats.

The one thing that I don’t love about almond butter is the price of it. It’s usually twice the cost of peanut butter, and I’ve seen it at over $15 for a jar in some stores. This is fine for occasional use, but I’d prefer to eat almond butter every day, so I love that I can make it myself for way less money.

Making your own homemade almond butter is easier than you think. I’m sharing all of my tricks and tips for making almond butter smooth, tasty, and easy.

Want to try your hand at Homemade Nutella? It’s basically a hazelnut butter with added chocolate. I have a recipe for homemade Peanut Butter as well!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe for Almond Butter

  1. Just 3 Ingredients. You can make almond butter with just almonds, but we’re adding salt and maple syrup for more flavor.
  2. Made Quickly. All you will need about 20 minutes to make this recipe.
  3. It’s Extra Smooth. I’ll tell you how I make the smoothest almond butter with one simple trick.
  4. It’s Delicious. Homemade almond butter is about one thousand percent better than store bought. It tastes just like freshly roasted almonds. You may not be able to go back to store bought nut butter again.
  5. Cost Effective. With almond butter prices pushing over the $10 mark for a single jar, I find that I can make my own for much less money. How much this costs is going to depend on the price you pay for nuts. Buy them in the bulk section of your grocery store for the best deal. I love the bulk section for all sorts of things. Nuts, beans, grains, snacks, and candy are all much less expensive this way.
  6. Makes a Great Gift. Who wouldn’t love to receive a jar of fresh almond butter as a gift? Think about gifts for family members at the holidays, or for teachers, caretakers, or coworkers.

Ingredients in Homemade Almond Butter

Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Raw Almonds – Buy your almonds raw so that you can roast them yourself. This is key to getting the smoothest, most delicious almond butter, and I’ll explain why later.
  • Salt – Salt brings out the flavor of the nuts. Just a small amount goes a long way.
  • Maple Syrup – This is optional, but I really love the extra bit of sweetness that maple syrup brings to this party. You can use any sweetener that you like, but I find that a liquid one like maple syrup or honey gives the best texture.

How To Make Almond Butter

Get your blender or food processor ready, it’s going to get a workout today. You can make this recipe in a standard food processor, or a high powered blender like a Vitamix. A regular blender won’t have the power for blending this recipe.

  1. Roast the Almonds: Preheat the oven and roast the almonds on a sheet pan for 10-12 minutes.
  2. Add to Blender: Remove almonds from the oven and add to the bowl of a food processor or the pitcher of a high powered blender.
  3. Blend: Blend for 4-5 minutes until liquified, smooth and creamy. You’ll see the nuts turn into a thick dough first, and with more time the mixture will thin out (see images above).
  4. Add Seasonings: Add salt and maple syrup and blend once more until combined. Any other desired flavorings can be added at this time as well.
  5. Store: Transfer into a glass jar and store, refrigerated, until ready to use.

Do I Need to Roast Almonds for Almond Butter?

Yes! Roasting the almonds is a very important step. You see, roasting nuts allows them to soften and begin to release their oils. When you blend warm nuts you’ll get a much smoother consistency to your nut butter.

If you buy almonds already roasted, you won’t have that benefit, and your nut butter will be dryer and chunkier. The same will happen if you blend raw almonds. I always recommend roasting nuts at home right before adding them to the blender for best results. Roasting almonds only takes about 10 minutes to do, and that time will be very well spent.

Homemade Almond Butter Variations

There are so many things that would be delicious added to this recipe to give more flavor.

  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Pure Vanilla Extract
  • Coconut Extract
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

Storing Tips

Your freshly ground almond butter will stay fresh in the refrigerator in a sealed jar for up to 2 weeks. It may even stay fresh longer than that, if it lasts that long. You’ll notice signs of spoilage (a bad smell) if it’s gone bad.

You’ll need to stir the almond butter before using it as the oil will separate from the solids as it sits.

  • Speaking of breakfast, this would also go great with French Toast, Pancakes or Waffles.
  • Use it to make granola! I have a delicious Peanut Butter Granola recipe, substitute the peanut butter with almond butter.
  • I could keep going for a while, but I think you get the idea. Almond butter really is a delicious and versatile topping.

I used the Ninja Food Processor and it would not turn the almonds into butter I blended for over a half hour and still nothing just crumbs.
I don’t know why as Ninja is a good food processor.

Sorry to hear your blender didn’t turn the almonds into butter 🙁 I’ve never used a Ninja so I don’t know how it works. I use a Vitamix.

I’ve only tried the variation with just salt. The result was so much tastier than store bought.

If you like coconut or cinnamon, try adding a little ground cinnamon or/and coconut oil next time. My favorite!

FAQs

Why won't my almond butter won't get creamy? ›

Roasting them for just 10 minutes before blending allows the natural oils within the almonds to release toward the skin, which really helps in the blending process. So if you don't want to roast them, you will need to add some oil, about 2 or so tablespoons to help it become creamy.

Is it cheaper to make your own almond butter? ›

Homemade almond butter is more affordable, too.

Just compare the price of one pound of raw almonds to the price of your favorite almond butter. The cost savings depend largely on the almond butter. I've bought jars of almond butter at Trader Joe's for seven dollars, so there's not much savings opportunity there.

Why is my homemade almond butter so dry? ›

Tips: If you're making almond butter without oil (just roasting) and it seems dry and flaky and not turning into butter, there's likely two reasons: 1) the almonds needed to roast just a little bit longer (see temperature note above), 2) the brand of almonds.

How long does homemade almond butter last? ›

Homemade raw almond butter will keep in the refrigerator for about two weeks, and store-bought may keep for months. A cooler with block ice or reusable freezer packs can also substitute for refrigeration. To store almond butter without a fridge or cooler, choose a cool, dry, dark place.

Why is my homemade nut butter not getting creamy? ›

If it's been about 10 minutes and your nut butter still isn't getting creamy, you can add a tiny bit of oil. I occasionally have to add 1 – 2 teaspoons of oil (I love using coconut oil) to help with the blending process, but when you're using roasted nuts, it really shouldn't be too much of a problem.

How do you keep almond butter creamy? ›

Store the jar upside down

This is a long-term solution that prevents the layer of dry, crumbly butter from ever forming, because by the time you get to the end of the jar it will have been flipped enough time for the oil to continually redistribute and keep the nut butter hydrated and smooth throughout.

Is almond butter actually healthier than peanut butter? ›

Vitamins and minerals

Almond butter is the frontrunner again, once you look more closely at the vitamin and mineral content. It contains nearly three times as much vitamin E, twice as much iron, and seven times more calcium than peanut butter.

Is almond butter more fattening than peanut butter? ›

Common questions. Do I need to add oil to homemade almond butter? If you are roasting the raw almonds first, there is no need to add any oil.
