Why does the Catholic Church discourage Bible reading? ›

In their eyes, the Church was trying to keep the Bible from the faithful or prejudice their interpretation of it. Likewise, unlike the Protestants, the Church maintained that biblical reading was not the only form of praiseworthy devotion.

Common examples of Catholic devotions are the Way of the Cross, the Rosary, the Angelus and various litanies, devotions to the Blessed Sacrament, the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Holy Face of Jesus, pilgrimages, observing the month of the Rosary in October and the month of Mary in May.

Roman Catholicism is the largest of the three major branches of Christianity. Thus, all Roman Catholics are Christian, but not all Christians are Roman Catholic. Of the estimated 2.3 billion Christians in the world, about 1.3 billion of them are Roman Catholics.

The readings that we as Catholics use at Mass are not chosen by the priest or members of our parishes. Instead, the Roman Catholic Church around the world has a standard set of scripture readings which the Church has compiled in a set of lectionaries, or books of readings.

It's in this sense that the Church endorses St. Thomas Aquinas's adage that “all other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal.” So if we mean literal in this older sense, we should always start by taking Scripture literally. Whatever else the Bible might mean, it means what its authors intended.

Secondly, the reading of the Bible was never prohibited. Certain translations that were considered heretical or that contained anti-Catholic commentaries were prohibited but those who were able to read an authorized translation were never forbidden to read the Bible.

Now, this doesn't mean that Catholics can't read the Bible and draw out personal insights. But any correct interpretations of Scripture won't contradict Church teaching; they won't go against things in the Catechism, for instance.
