How high should my dog jump in agility? ›

12 Inches: For dogs 14 inches and under at the withers. 16 Inches: For dogs 18 inches and under at the withers.

What do I enter—Novice A, Novice B or Novice Preferred. Novice A is for a handler that has not put a title on a dog in AKC agility. So if you do not have a title in any other class you go in Novice A. Everyone else enters Novice B.

How many points do I need to qualify? Maximum number of points is 80. Minimum is 50 for Novice, 55 for Open, 60 for Excellent. You must take the Send Bonus in order to qualify.

Although there's no black and white line to say if a breed will or won't enjoy agility, some breeds may struggle more with obstacles depending on their size or shape. Generally, breeds that are more active and naturally inquisitive will find agility easier.

Due to the physical exertion involved in agility, it's important for dogs to be fully grown before they officially start. This will vary by breed but generally is around 12-18 months of age. That doesn't mean you can't start teaching the foundations that will set you up for success on the agility course though.

Preferred is defined in accordance with AKC jump height requirements that allow a dog to compete at 4” lower than their standard (regular) height as determined by their jump height card and according to AKC Height Measurements.

The white dog is a local dog that runs the course so the crowd can see where the course goes, the judge can review her handling path and theoretically, that those competitors that have an early draw can watch at least one dog run so they can “see” the course before they must run it.

Dog Jumping

Some breeds are known to jump higher than 6 feet (1.83 m), and according to the American Kennel Club, most dogs can jump "several times their own height." The AKC does, however, suggest that young puppies shouldn't jump at extreme heights until they're at least 12 to 15 months old.

Height categories are as follows: large dogs, measuring over 500mm at the withers. intermediate dogs, measuring over 430mm and measuring 500mm or under at the withers. medium dogs, measuring over 350mm and measuring 430mm or under at the withers.
