Jesus Revolution Reviews
The narrative falls short of delving into the substantive core of these two influential movements, rendering the film, at best, a superficial and fluffy exploration.

These are fleshed out, imperfect characters. Not the paragons of virtue we sometimes see in this genre.

This is the kind of film that needs to get to a broader audience and Erwin has structured this film to be welcoming.

Like all those missing carpenter years from the original text, this true story also leaves out a number of relevant interesting details to soften the hypocrisy of its players.

I might recommend the movie for devout viewers with a strong connection to Christianity, but for those without religious ties, Jesus Revolution won’t convert you.

The filmmakers gently capture the groovy vibe of the period, even if the warm-hearted Christian messaging sometimes overpowers the narrative. But there are dark edges to the story that add authenticity and some gentle provocation.

It’s a more interesting historical subject than you’ll find in most American Christian films, but the usual bland, cornball style of such movies still applies.

The result is a stifling, corny and sentimental narrative.

The best parts include Grammer’s low-key performance as Chuck, accepting early Lonnie’s arrival as a chance to spread God’s word, and Roumie’s portrayal of Lonnie, which hints at the darker strains in his backstory.

Greg ironing his clothes in an early scene is an apt metaphor for this movie: It’s flat and crisp and clean and totally SQUARE, man.

Makes its points but does not have the emotional impact you would expect from a movie striving to be inspirational.

The film is inspirational and beautiful when Pastor Chuck opens his church to those in need of guidance. Jonathan Roumie is charismatic as the hippie preacher. It also tackles the hypocrisy of religion, although there's a level of it in the ending.

At first glance, Jesus Revolution is an inspiring, heartwarming watch, but it gives a seamlessly joyful look at a movement with a harmful past, in a way that feels like a slap in the face in the year of our Lord 2023.

Not a cinematic revolution, but its solid story and craftsmanship delivers an enjoyable experience that awakened my faith in the potential of religious films. [Full Review in Spanish]

Although there are very frank discussions about the nature of faith, it doesn't feel as preachy or heavy-handed as a lot of these films do, which to me personally makes them off-putting.

The problems with Jesus Revolution have nothing do with religion. This 1970s-set biopic drama about Harvest Crusades founder Greg Laurie has too many bad scenes with hokey dialogue and subpar acting. Many of the cast members are not convincing as hippies.

This drama is almost certain to energize and inspire the Christian crowd, but it's also likely to captivate those who tend to avoid films about religion. That's both because it's very well made and because there's an honesty and accountability here.

Though most people don't want a Bible lesson, especially if they didn't ask for one, the new faith-based film is a step in the right direction.
