In a recent post, The Best Natural Skincare Products+ Tips for Problematic Skin, I promised to share some of my favorite DIY face mask recipes. So, drum roll, please…..here they are! These recipes for homemade face masks for acne actually work. Trust me. As someone who has battled with problematic skin all their life, I can attest to these. I tried product after product with no results. It wasn’t until one particular product caused a horrible reaction, a minor chemical burn, that I decided to try another route.

A gentle reminder – It’s ridiculously easy for us to fall into the routine of serving others, and there are times when we forget to do something for ourselves. I’m guilty of this. I’m also guilty of making time for the things I like – shopping, getting my nails done, etc., and not taking care of the whole woman. Neglecting to actually get to the bottom of my skin problems stretched them out and made them worse. Beautiful, you have to take care of the whole woman, not just the parts you like.

My Favorite Homemade Face Mask Recipes for Acne That Actually Work

  • Turmeric & Yogurt Face Mask
  • Lemon & Honey Face Mask
  • Turmeric Ginger Tea w/ Lemon and Honey

Okay, so a few disclaimers before we jump into this. I’m not a dermatologist, a licensed esthetician, or anything close. These are all recipes I discovered online and from family and friends and have had success with in my personal life. I recommend that you consult a skin care professional before applying any of these face masks or adding teas to your diet. You should also always patch-test these ingredients to ensure you won’t have any adverse reactions. It’s also a pretty good idea to start with clean hands and consider using a face mask applicator. I’m a big fan of this applicator and bowl set.

Turmeric & Yogurt Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of yogurt
  • ⅛ teaspoon ofturmeric
  • a squeeze of lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of honey

Combine all ingredients into a bowl to create a creamy paste. Apply to skin using a face mask applicator, leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes, and rinse clean. You can apply this mask up to once a week. If you’ve had a chance to read The Best Natural Skincare Products+ Tips for Problematic Skin, then you know all about the many benefits of turmeric. But did you know that yogurt has many skin-boosting properties as well? Yogurt is moisturizing, helps fight acne, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and can even help with hyperpigmentation. A big concern for women of color, especially if you’re dealing with acne. This homemade face mask helped clear my acne and faded the scarring that was left behind. This mask boasts so many other benefits, too – it’s known to even out overall skin tone, reduce dark circles, and slow down cell damage.

A few extra disclaimers with this mask – turmeric is known to stain. Everything. So, you’ll want to wear an old t-shirt that you don’t mind staining when applying this. You should also avoid getting turmeric into your hairline and may want to consider a spa headband. If your skin retains a yellow tinge after rinsing, try using milk or coconut oil to remove the excess staining.

Lemon and Honey Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • a teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of raw honey

Mix ingredients together to form a paste-like consistency. You may have to play around with the measurements a bit to get the perfect blend. Add extra baking soda or a little water depending on if it needs to thicken or loosen up. Apply to face and leave on for up to 15 minutes. Rinse clean. This particular homemade face mask works wonders for acne. Baking soda serves as an exfoliant and helps dry out and prevent breakouts. Raw honey also comes with a long list of skin-perfecting benefits. It’s naturally moisturizing, helps balance out bacteria on your skin, and is packed with antioxidants (source). I can literally feel this mask working. You may experience tingling and tightening as well; to me, it was a sign that it was doing its job. I always followed up with a light moisturizer after using this mask.

Turmeric Giner Tea w/ Lemon and Honey

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp grated fresh turmeric
  • 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2-3 whole peppercorns
  • 4 cups water
  • 1-2 sliced lemons
  • 2 Cinnamon sticks

Okay, this one isn’t a face mask. But it is my new favorite tea made from all my favorite ingredients. I came across this recipe while lost in the neverending loop of YouTube and I’m not disappointed. If these same ingredients had such a great impact on my skin externally, they have to do something good on the inside, right? I try to drink it often, but please consult your doctor before adding this to your diet. Both turmeric and ginger come with their own side effects if consumed in excess.

To make, combine all the ingredients into a pot and bring to a boil. Once it’s boiling, I reduce the temperature and allow it to simmer for up to 10 minutes. That’s it. It’s so simple. After it’s boiled for a few minutes, I remove the pot and allow it to cool before transferring it to a pitcher. When I’m ready, I pour it into my favorite mug and sweeten it with a generous amount of honey.

This tea is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It supports your immune systems, and some of the ingredients, like ginger, are known for reducing nausea.

Some cultures credit this blend for their clear skin and keeping natural curves. The best part is that it’s 100% natural and tastes delicious.

There you have it! My favorite homemade face masks (and tea) for acne!
