How does travel trailer insurance work?
Matt Hands, VP, Insurance and MoneySense
Trailer insurance is a form of coverage that protects your non-motorized vehicle from the unique risks it could face – such as liability, collision, and theft. It differs from RV motorhome insurance, a type of policy that's required for vehicles that aren't towed but rather driven on their own.
In Ontario, a trailer won't be covered entirely by your personal car insurance policy. Instead, the third-party liability portion will apply to a trailer but only while it's being towed. And other types of coverages on your auto policy – such as collision and comprehensive insurance – won't automatically extend to your trailer.
That's why you should consider purchasing trailer insurance separately. Not only will you be covered adequately against risks on the road, but you can also protect yourself from off-road risks, such as a break-in. It's always a good idea to protect yourself financially, and it may be exactly what you need to enjoy your road trip worry-free.
Do you have to insure a trailer in Ontario?
Non-motorized, towed vehicles don’t require their own insurance policy in Ontario. But despite so, it’s always a good idea to protect yourself financially ahead of time.
The different types of trailers to insure
No matter what type of trailer you own, you can find customized coverage for your needs – here are a few examples of trailers that should be insured.
What does trailer insurance cover?
While your auto policy can extend some protection to your trailer while it’s hitched, you’ll still be left with many gaps – so here are some types of coverages you can consider adding to your trailer insurance policy.
- Third-party liability– Your car’s liability insurance can protect your trailer while you’re towing it on the road, but the coverage won’t apply while it’s parked. Trailer liability coverage ensures you’re protected at all times against claims of bodily injury and property damage from a third party – it can be used to pay for legal expenses, medical bills, and awarded damages.
- Collision insurance – Collision insurance for your trailer works the same way as it would on a conventional car policy. With this coverage, the cost to repair or replace your damaged trailer will be covered by your insurance company in the event you hit another vehicle or an object while driving.
- Comprehensive insurance – Comprehensive insurance protects your trailer from risks that aren’t collision-related. This can include loss or damage claims regarding theft, vandalism, fire, severe weather, and falling objects.
- Specified perils insurance – If you choose specified perils insurance for your travel trailer, you’re essentially selecting the exact risks you want to be protected against. For instance, you can name theft and fire as perils on your trailer policy but omit coverage for falling objects. While it does expose you to more risk, it’s cheaper than choosing full comprehensive coverage.
- All perils insurance – By choosing all perils insurance, you’ll generally be protected against all risks of loss or damage, except for those explicitly disregarded in your trailer policy. Essentially, it’s a combination of collision and comprehensive insurance, plus a little extra.
- Contents insurance – Like the contents insurance on your home policy, this type of coverage insures the personal belongings stored within your trailer. That way, if a thief breaks into your vehicle during your camping trip, you won’t be on your own when it comes to replacing everything.
- Emergency roadside assistance – Emergency roadside assistance for a trailer works similarly to the way it would for your car. You’ll be covered if you’re ever in need of services, such as towing and battery boosting.
- Emergency vacation expense – This coverage can help pay for reasonable expenses incurred while you’re waiting for your trailer to be repaired or replaced due to an insured risk – some examples include hotel bills, bus passes, and food deliveries.
- Guaranteed replacement cost – This endorsem*nt provides you with the funds to replace your trailer with a new one, in the event your vehicle is declared a total loss due to an insured risk. Otherwise, you could be paid out the actual cash value, also known as the depreciated value of your trailer.
- Frozen food coverage – Frozen food coverage is exactly what it sounds like – compensation for your frozen food if it becomes spoiled or damaged after a trailer accident.
- Water protection – A water protection endorsem*nt protects your vehicle from damage caused by flooding. Depending on your policy, this can include coverage for overland water, sewage back-up, or both.
- Full-time & camper liability – Full-time liability insurance can protect you against claims of third-party property damage or bodily injury claims while you’re using your trailer as your primary residence. Camper liability insurance, on the other hand, protects you against legal claims while you’re using your trailer for a short-term trip.
How much does trailer insurance cost?
The more expensive your trailer costs, the more you’ll be paying to insure it. Therefore, the cost of trailer insurance can vary greatly – expect to pay anywhere from $250 to over $1,000 each year for coverage. Factors that impact your trailer insurance quote
Type of trailer
The cost of a trailer can range greatly, and therefore, so does its insurance. Generally speaking, the more expensive it is to repair or replace your vehicle, the more you’ll be paying to protect it. Also, larger trailers often come with higher premiums due to the increased risks.
Storage
Your insurer may take into account how you store your trailer when it’s not in use. Parking your trailer on a public road brings a different level of risk than parking in a private garage – and your insurance premium will reflect that.
Contents value
With more valuables in your trailer, comes the need for more trailer insurance. Therefore, if your vehicle is decorated with all new furnishings and equipped with expensive technology, expect to pay more for your contents coverage.
Trailer usage
The more you use your trailer, the more expensive your premium will be. So if you’re a full-timer, don’t expect to pay the same rate as someone who hitches their trailer once every summer.
Coverage type
A policy an increased coverage selection will cost more, simply because you’ll be protected against more risks. And if you choose to insure your trailer and contents for its replacement value – instead of its depreciated, actual cash value – you’ll also be paying more.
Insurance history
If you’ve made several at-fault claims in the past, don’t expect your future rates to be cheap. Insurance companies like to see low-risk policyholders, so a clean insurance history and a low trailer insurance premium go hand-in-hand.
Applicable discounts
For a lower rate, be sure to ask your insurance broker about available trailer insurance discounts. There are many ways to save, including bundling your trailer, auto, and home policies under one company.

Frequently asked questions: trailer insurance
Is a trailer covered by auto insurance?
Yes and no – the third-party liability portion of your car insurance policy also extends to your trailer but only while it's being towed. That's why it's always a good idea to purchase a separate policy for your trailer as you wouldn't otherwise be covered for risks such as collision, theft, and severe weather.
This also means your car's liability insurance won't apply to the trailer while it's parked or if it becomes unhitched. For instance, if your trailer detaches itself while you're on the highway, causing a car accident, your auto insurance company could potentially deny the claim.
Do you need insurance for a camper trailer in Ontario?
Insurance isn’t required for camper trailers (or any type of non-motorized trailer) in Ontario, but it’s highly recommended to purchase the right coverage anyways. You wouldn’t want to leave one of your biggest investments unprotected as one small mistake can turn into a huge financial loss – a trailer insurance policy is there to protect you from the unexpected.
